What is a Shiva Linga?

According to Hindu history, the Shiva Linga represents the Universe, the doorway to the Beyond. Being in the presence of the Shiva Linga can take you through this doorway into the beyond. The Shiva Linga is the unmanifest form of Shiva. In this space new levels of calmness and healing and manifestation often take place. The Shiva Linga represents the cosmic consciousness ParamaShiva in the form of a light shaft with no beginning and with no end.  It is the formless form of ParamaShiva from which all other forms emerge from.

Why is this Shiva Linga so important?

This linga is Sri Nithyanandeshwara Paramashiva Linga, an exact replica of the Shiva Linga in the Sri Arunachaleshwara Temple in Thiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu, India. He is 'swayambhu', a Sanskrit word meaning 'self-manifested', 'self-existing', or 'that is created by its own accord'.  This is the largest Shiva Linga in North America, and was carved by SPH HDH JGM Bhagavan Nithyananda Paramashivam himself.

How to worship the Shiva Linga

1. Being in the presence of the Shiva Linga enables the unmanifest to be transmitted to you. You may notice yourself becoming calmer and more clear

2. Meditating in the presence of the Linga is very calming and clearing

3. Taking the prasad, or blessed food from the Shiva Linga allows the energy to flow into your whole body, pulling you in tune with the sacred

4. Asking for a boon. These boons are answered over time

5. Sharing a message with Nandi. Nandi is the bull who guards the Shiva Linga. By sharing a message into the ear of Nandi, it is believed that the message goes directly to Shiva.

6. Purify the body by taking the temple offerings. The temple offers Kumkum, vibhooti, prasad and blessed water which has the effect of purifying the body.
